A Greensboro Fixture Comes To Roanoke

natty_greenesAny list of common destinations for Roanoke natives would almost certainly include Greensboro, North Carolina.  Given that city’s well known shopping possibilities, sports and concert related events, as well as it’s close geographical proximity to our own town, you’ve probably spent an afternoon there or several.  At the very least, you’ve likely passed through it on the way to the beach.  If you consider yourself beer curious at all, or needed to grab a cold one after being dragged around the mall for five hours, as I have, chances are good that on one of those trips you’ve also become well aware of Natty Greene’s Brewing.  The brewpub which gave birth to a second location in Raleigh as well as a full production brewery has been a fixture on Greensboro’s scene since the 2004, serving up familiar beers such as their Southern Pale Ale and their Buckshot Amber Ale.  For those of us in the Roanoke area who recognize names such as these, that familiarity is about to become a little bit more concrete in our minds as Natty Greene’s is finally introduced to the Star City at the end of the week.

This coming weekend, Martin’s in downtown Roanoke will kick off Natty Greene’s introduction to the city, although the exact beers which will be on hand has yet to be determined.  Chances are good those listed above are good bets to make an appearance.  Also commonly found at least in restaurants around North Carolina are their Freedom IPA and their Wildflower Witbier.  All of the brewery’s beers as well as a detailed history of its growth can be found on its website here.  Exact times and whether it will be Friday or Saturday for the event at Martin’s will follow, so keep a watch out here on the blog and also, I’m sure, on Martin’s own website and/or Facebook page.

Roanoke Craft Curious – Ready For Flying Mouse?

•September 5, 2013 • Leave a Comment

Flying Mouse BrewingOriginally, I thought the chances were good they might have been members of some local company’s softball team.  It was at a beer festival after all, Microfestivus in August of 2012, that I ran across the six or seven people all standing in a loose half circle, wearing the same beige t-shirts with the same logo, and softball teams, let’s face it, are known for heading out for a brew or two after a game, or practice, or perhaps in this case, generally just for the heck of it.  But the fact that these folks seemed to be all be very into their beer, and of course – the logo, one of a very determined looking mouse wearing what looked like a pair of those old fashioned, Amelia Earhart style aviator goggles, begged the question – who are you guys, anyway?  I mean, as softball team logos go, theirs was pretty cool, and if they often headed out for a beer for just about any reason, heck – I’d pitch for ya.  As it turns out, their story was better than any slow pitch team could possibly offer.  The logo stood for a new brewery, “Flying Mouse”, opening up in nearby Daleville in about a year, and the half dozen staff members and supporters wearing it proudly on their shirts were more than willing to talk both logos and beer.  It was also obvious these folks already had a plan in mind – they were marketing the brewery before it even broke ground.  Roughly a year later, the time has come for the folks at Flying Mouse to not just stand around and talk about beer, but to begin pouring it – and more importantly, it will be their own.

Flying Mouse Beer Menu Fall 2013Yes, Flying Mouse has announced it will be opening this weekend.  Following the fairly recent and successful opening of Salem’s Parkway Brewing, the introduction of Flying Mouse makes three breweries in the Roanoke area, and puts another substantially important notch on the timeline of the growth of craft beer here.  Among the details the brewery communicated through their facebook page yesterday, a tasting room and beer garden will be ready this weekend to likely serve three different beers, which will not only kick off the brewery’s opening, but also will be the first to display the brewery’s branding philosophy.  Each of the brewery’s beers will be known by a number instead of a name.  As John Garrett, the brewery’s Marketing Director explains, the first three beers “will cover the light, medium and dark ranges, with numbers going up as the color, flavor and weight of the beers get darker and heavier”.  For example, these first beers out of the gate for Flying Mouse will be their Flying Mouse “3” (a Kolsch style beer, and typically quite light in color), “5” (an anticipated English Bitter style beer, and often amber in color), and “8” (a Porter).  All three of the introductory beers can be fairly approachable when done well, as collectively they straddle enough stylistic area to please a wide group of people.  Other brews will follow.  “We plan on having seasonal beers after we get started with the first three.”

At this year’s Microfestivus, Flying Mouse returned.  From under their own tent, they again were spreading the word, knowing the beer was nearly ready.  Again, staff were on hand, happy to talk about beer and the brewery.  It seemed to be one of the busiest tents at the festival all day long, and to be sure, many who approached it were asking just when their own beer would be flowing.  We now have the answer.  Come out and taste the original beers from Flying Mouse this weekend, which I’m sure the brewery hopes will not only become favorites in the area, but help place Flying Mouse into the collective consciousness of beer fans in the area.

Weekend Tap Update: Live Music + Craft Beer = One Great Weekend.

Who doesn’t like a little entertainment with their local and regionally brewed beer, or perhaps it’s the other way around, depending on your priorities.  No matter, craft beer pairs well with any good time, and this weekend will feature plenty of chances to take in all of the above.  Leading off the weekend tonight at Martin’s in downtown Roanoke, South Carolina based band Dangermuffin will be playing alongside a Starr Hill (Crozet, Va) tap takeover event.  Tickets for Nelson County’s upcoming Lockn’ (formerly Interlocken) multi day music festival will also be given away.  Prior to the show, the band will also be at a meet and greet event at Ripple, just a few blocks away from Martin’s.  According to Ripple’s facebook page, they will also have a Starr Hill tasting as well.  Do yourself a favor – if you’re interested in kicking off your weekend with a blast, love great live music and great craft beer, start off at Ripple (event from 7 to 8pm) and then make your way over to Martin’s for the show a bit later on.

Not that you need any additional reason to spend some in Grandin Village, since many of the restaurants there not only offer great food but plenty of craft beer, but the latest edition of their Grandin “Chillage” is also happening tonight, with area favorites Tobacco Apache and Electric Chameleon providing the music and plenty of Parkway Brewing beers on hand.   Before (or after,, or both) Chillage, make your way over to Local Roots Restaurant, which has just added Parkway’s Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Dubbel.  It comes with a complimentary glass from the brewery.  Just a note, plenty of interesting German imported beer will be upcoming at Local Roots as well, just in time for Oktoberfest.

Looking ahead, several other events are coming up fast.  On September 10th, the folks from Wine Gourmet will be hosting a beer tasting dinner featuring Unibroue, at 1906 Ale House.  Also, Jack Brown’s in downtown has a couple of steal the pint nights coming up, the first on September 10 featuring Lost Rhino and the next on the 16th featuring Richmond’s own Legend Brewing.

Weekend Tap Update – Seasons Aside, There Is Plenty of Great New Beer On Draft (and in bottle) To Try

Personally, I’m not ready to give up summer.  And as much it always rubs me the wrong way (just a little) to match up beer styles and seasons, I know how many still think fall and winter equals darker beer, and warmer temperatures mean more pales, IPAs, and the like.  So just for the record, if last week’s two day cooling off was truly a glimpse into what’s to come, let me just state for the record, the IPAs will continue at current rate, it’s just that I might add in more stouts, porters, and the like.  (Oh, and isn’t Oktoberfest time around the corner?)

Having said that, this weekend just might mean a chance to stick to those seasonal stereotypes, however wrong they might be, and transition from summer to fall with new beer that covers both.  For those still hanging on to summer, on tap at Local Roots is Wolf Hill’s Fightin’ Parsons’ Pale Ale and Lost Rhino’s Meridian Kolsch, and the latest release in Stone Brewing’s Enjoy By series (09.13.13) has made it to the taps at Blue 5, as well as the IPA loving brewery’s 17th anniversary beer, Gotterdammerung, which information on the brewery’s website describes as a high abv% pilsner crossed with an IPA.  For those who can’t wait for the cooling off, around the corner at Martin’s in downtown Roanoke, apparently there are a limited number of bottles (yes, bottles) of DuClaw’s Sweet Baby Jesus Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter.  Over the last few years, there have been a few beers from well known breweries which attempt to recreate the luscious, delicious nature of a peanut butter cup in a glass (Terrapin’s Liquid Bliss also comes to mind), but at a 93 rating on ratebeer.com, this one may just nail it better than most.  For those who cannot wait for the turning of the leaves to begin, the Pumpkin ales, already well into their season in bottle form at local grocery stores, have begun reaching taps as well.  Blue 5 has at least one, Foothills’ Cottonwood Pumpkin Ale.

In other draft related news, 501 Speakeasy on Campbell Avenue finally got the go ahead for beer, and has added local brews Sunken City Brown Porter, Dam Lager, Three Brothers’ Admiral IPA, and Bold Rock’s Virginia Apple cider – congrats!!

Last but not least, it is important to note that Blue 5 also apparently has added Parkway Brewing’s “Magella”, a strong dark Belgian ale previously available in fairly limited quantities.

Whatever kind of a beer you tend to link your seasons to, and however the weather turns out for the weekend, (personally, I can feel it warming up now) Roanoke has a beer for you – get out and try new amazing beer, find a new favorite, and expand horizons, craft curious….cheers!
